Peculiarities of placing medals and orders on a dress uniform jacket

Military

Awards on the uniform of the military and police are arranged in a strictly defined sequence. There is no room for liberties here, and this has an inimitable beauty and uniqueness. It is important for soldiers and officers to know how medals should be placed on a dress uniform jacket, as well as the laws regulating this order. The arrangement of award symbols can determine a person's merits to the Motherland.

Types of awards and distinctions

All awards presented in Russia and the USSR, as well as distinctive badges on the tunic of various units of the country's executive government bodies, must be placed in a certain order. Of primary importance are the orders that were presented in the Russian Federation. Following them are:

  • Soviet orders;
  • symbols of distinction of the Russian Federation;
  • Medals of the Russian Federation;
  • Soviet medals;
  • awards for departments of the domestic Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The remaining awards of the units are placed on a special list of authorized representatives of the executive authority. The procedure for wearing is determined by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 1099 of 09/07/2010 "On measures to improve the state award system of the Russian Federation."

Orders awarded by the authorities of foreign countries are worn after the symbols of executive bodies. The same rule applies to neck ribbons with foreign insignia - they are placed strictly after similar domestic ones. If representatives of the internal affairs departments have awards from any public organizations, they are prohibited from wearing them on military uniforms.

Wearing procedure

The most important awards for military personnel and civilians - special distinction badges - are usually placed on the left side of the tunic. These include the medals of the Heroes of Russia and the USSR, the award symbol of the Hero of Socialist Labor and Labor of the Russian Federation, as well as the badge of the order "Mother Heroine". Among other awards, the following orders are prescribed to be worn on this side of the tunic under these badges:

  • A. Nevsky;
  • F. Ushakova;
  • M. Kutuzova;
  • Courage;
  • A. Suvorova;
  • G. Zhukova;
  • P. Nakhimova;
  • Friendship;
  • Honor;
  • "Parental Glory";
  • V. Lenin;
  • Red Banner;
  • Friendship of peoples;
  • "For personal courage";
  • October Revolution;
  • Red Banner of Labor;
  • "Badge of Honor";
  • Glory and Labor Glory (all three degrees);
  • "For Services to the Fatherland" (2-3 degrees).

Among the distinctive symbols, all four degrees of the St. George Cross are attached to the left side of the jacket. Other medals are also located there, the list of which is quite extensive. These include:

  • "For courage";
  • G. Zhukova;
  • P. Nesterova;
  • A. Suvorova;
  • F. Ushakova;
  • A. Pushkin;
  • "To the Defender of a Free Russia";
  • "For achievements in protecting the state border and public peace";
  • Millennia of Kazan.

The placement of medals on the dress jacket implies the presence of almost all Soviet medals from the Great Patriotic War on the left side. This category includes awards for the defense of the most important cities and areas of the USSR, liberation from occupation or the capture of European capitals. Soviet labor medals are hung on the left side of the jacket. Award badges from the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs and medals on the jackets of the Ministry of Emergency Situations are also located there.

Fewer awards are worn on the right side of the jacket. The main ones are the signs of national honorary titles, the number of wounds, and the distinction "For Impeccable Service". Among the orders they hang:

  • G. Zhukova;
  • F. Ushakova (1-3 st.);
  • P. Nakhimov (1-3 st.);
  • A. Suvorov (1-3 degrees);
  • M. Kutuzova (1-3 degrees);
  • B. Khmelnitsky (1-3 st.);
  • "For Service to the Motherland" in the USSR Armed Forces (1st-3rd rank);
  • Patriotic War (1-2 centuries);
  • A. Nevsky;
  • Red Star.

Only one medal is allowed on the right side - "For Distinction in Military Service" of both degrees. It is also customary to wear symbols of graduation from higher education institutions there. Some types of orders and medals are hung on a special ribbon on the right shoulder. These include:

  • Apostle Andrew the First-Created;
  • "For services to the Fatherland";
  • St. George 1st class

The first and third awards from this list are not usually attached to one ribbon. In the most important, honorable situations, the first order is allowed to be worn on a special chain. The ribbons are placed over the symbols located on the right side of the clothing. There is a special neck ribbon, to which the badges of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland and St. George of the 2nd and 3rd degree are usually attached.

Posting rules

On the left side of the jacket, the badges of special distinction must be placed so that the top of the medal bar is level with the jacket ledge and lapel. If there are two or more such badges, they are placed in one line, from the right side to the left. There must be 10-millimeter gaps between the side edges of the stars. If the badges of special distinction have the same name, they are put on in the chronology of presentation.

Orders and medals, as well as their insignia, are placed horizontally from the middle of the chest of the tunic to the edges. All other lines are placed in the same way. The order bars in the lower rows must be placed under the awards of the upper row. The space between them must be 3.5 cm.

On jackets and double-breasted jackets, awards are placed in such an order that the tops of the medal and order blocks of the initial line are 7 cm below the level of the lapel step. If we are talking about a single-breasted jacket, this figure increases to 9 cm. Order stars should be 1 cm below the blocks. They are all placed in turn, in a certain order. A gap of 1 cm is maintained between the stars.

If a person is awarded the Order of St. George, 1st degree, then a similar award of the previous, second degree, can no longer be worn. The same rule applies to "For Services to the Fatherland" (except for the order with the image of swords).

On the right side of the jacket, regalia are hung from left to right. The largest sign on the starting line should have its top level with the overall block. Everything that does not fit into the top row is put into the lower ones. The distance between them is 1 cm.

The "For Impeccable Service" symbol is hung so that its top is level with the lapel ledge. As for the chest badges to it, they are hung to the right. The symbols of the number of wounds are placed on the fabric strip of the upper part of the product.

Innovations in the order of wearing awards

On November 26, 2018, the Russian Minister of Defense issued a new order #677 on the rules for wearing medals. According to it, it is now forbidden to hang more than 10 state regalia on the left side of a dress jacket. This was done to prohibit wearing various awards of public organizations, which are often attached to the uniform by military personnel. They look unaesthetic, confuse outsiders and have no real value. This picture has already been dubbed "iconostasis" by the people. The location of medals on a civilian suit remains the same.

The dress uniform has also changed. From now on, the priority is given to the new single-breasted jacket in a sea-green color with a standing, thick collar. It has golden-colored buttonhole badges - rectangular symbols with a prominent lower part, which are associated with the appearance of the emblems of the Russian Guard of the 19th century. Jackets for generals are equipped with a laurel branch, painted in a golden hue.
