Buying dolls for children is an expensive pleasure, but buying doll clothes sometimes turns out to be more expensive than the cost of the doll itself. In this case, there is a way out - to sew clothes yourself. Do-it-yourself doll clothes can be very diverse. They are made from a variety of materials. The main thing is to use your imagination, and finding patterns and diagrams is not difficult.
Existing options
Doll clothes can be made from a variety of materials and in a variety of techniques. When choosing what to make clothes for a textile doll from, pay attention to the toy itself. For example, pumpkin-head dolls are more likely to require knitted items, and dresses are made from retro materials for Soviet dolls. If it is a big-foot doll, a shape like a Tilda doll will not work for it.
From paper
Whatever toy you have, for example, a Tilda doll, life-size paper patterns will make sewing much easier. If you decide to make a dress for a mannequin out of paper, it is best to choose corrugated paper or felt. These materials bend well and are suitable for sewing. It is not recommended to make paper clothes for textile dolls, as they will be difficult to put on and impractical.
When working with felt, it is advisable to make paper or cardboard patterns. If the clothes are made from corrugated paper, or from ordinary colored paper or cardboard, sewing options are used without making a pattern. Thus, the lined paper will be the material for making the form. It should be noted that paper clothes are short-lived and are not suitable for small children. They are made for older girls who are careful during games and will not tear the paper product.
Knitted
Clothes for dolls can be made with a crochet hook or knitting needles. Knitted clothes for dolls have certain advantages:
- It is durable. It is difficult for a child to tear or unravel such clothes, so it is suitable even for the smallest girls;
- If the child gets this clothing dirty during play, it can be removed from the toy and easily washed;
- When knitting items, they resort to a variety of techniques, thus making multi-colored or winter clothes. Even a beginner in this business can knit clothes with a crochet hook according to a pattern or with knitting needles with a description of the work. Basic knowledge of knitting is enough. When knitting, old yarn is used or a stretched sweater or scarf is unraveled.
Knitted clothes have their disadvantages:
- It is impossible to involve children in the production process - the knitting technique is too complicated for them;
- This form takes a lot of time to make;
- Often the items are very small, and making miniature clothing turns out to be quite a difficult task.
Sewn
Sewing toy clothes from socks is popular. A variety of items are sewn from socks for dolls:
- Dresses;
- Sweaters;
- T-shirts;
- T-shirts;
- Skirts;
- Coat;
- Vests;
- Blouses and so on.
Much depends on your imagination. One of the advantages of sewn clothes is the ability to rip the stitching and change its location if necessary. That is, if the needlewoman sewed an element in the wrong place, it is not difficult to change it. At the same time, sewing miniature clothes can be problematic. Not every sewing machine can handle such miniature sizes, so most likely, you will have to sew by hand.
Even girls of primary school age are attracted to sewing dresses. They are able to cope with a thread and a needle. This gives them the opportunity to develop creative thinking, fine motor skills of the hands and master basic sewing skills. Clothes sewn from scraps of fabric are easiest to decorate with decorative elements.
When making fabric items, you have the opportunity to use your imagination. You can combine different materials, sew on ruffles and frills.
Master class
When sewing clothes for dolls with your own hands, you should remember several basic rules:
- When making clothes and shoes for dolls with your own hands, you should remember that dolls are made using a model of the human body, which means that the entire toy form is the same as an adult's, only smaller in size. The smaller the doll, the more careful the sewing should be. All sewing should be as precise and careful as possible, since errors are much more visible on small parts;
- Don't be lazy and make a paper pattern before cutting on fabric. If we cut out of fabric right away, there is a greater chance of making a mistake and ruining a small but still beautiful piece of material. The pattern is made of cardboard.
This master class will describe the step-by-step production of a toy skirt. By adjusting the length and material of manufacture, several sets of clothes are modeled that will differ from each other. Such clothes made with your own hands will suit a variety of toys.
Choice of style
The choice of style of doll clothes depends on the doll itself, its size and gender. Clothes for dolls need to be wider, for boys more businesslike, and for girl dolls - refined and elegant. When choosing a style, it is necessary to measure the chest, waist, hips, the length of the doll itself, the width of the chest and shoulders. Accurate data will help to make clothes that will most accurately fit this toy.
When making clothes, think about how the toy will use them. When making evening, ball or formal wear, choose more lush and luxurious options. Colored fabrics and a large number of decorative ornaments will suit it. If you are sewing business clothes, for example, office or work clothes, choose discreet colors, white or black, and a more formal style. If the clothes are going to be home, give preference to a loose, not tight cut and not too heavy fabric. It is not recommended to decorate home clothes with a large number of decorative elements.

Tools and materials
When making clothes and shoes for dolls with your own hands, you must have a starter set of tools. Among them are:
- Scissors;
- Needles;
- Threads;
- Scraps of fabric or socks;
- It is desirable to have a sewing machine;
- Measuring tape;
- Decor.
You can make your own doll clothes sewing kit and put in it:
- Miniature scissors;
- Needles;
- Several multi-colored threads;
- A thin measuring tape;
- Lace and frills.
With this beginner's kit, you can easily make clothes for dolls. The following materials are used to sew a skirt:
- Old children's socks;
- Old nylon tights or fishnet tights;
- Any piece of cotton or knitted fabric;
- Old sweaters or cardigans;
- Clean pieces of small children's T-shirts;
- Scraps left over from sewing dresses or other clothing.
When making a template with patterns for a new doll, do not throw it away, but put it in your sewing kit. This pattern can still be useful when creating items from another fabric or for another doll.

Opening
How to make a pattern:
- When making a skirt, you will need the following data: waist circumference, hip circumference, and the length of the intended skirt.
- Materials are of great importance. If the fabric is knitted and stretchy, take smaller pieces. If the fabric is thick, choose a larger piece - the skirt will look more voluminous;
- Decide on the fullness of the skirt. Depending on the fullness, the width of the fabric cut is determined. A skirt of medium fullness needs a piece of fabric twice as wide as the doll's hip circumference. A very full skirt needs a piece of fabric that is 3 or 4 times larger than the hip circumference;
- Let's assume that the doll's hip circumference is 13 cm. A skirt of medium fullness requires a cut of about 30 cm. Measure 30 cm on a sheet of paper and make a mark;
- Next, you need to decide on the length of the skirt. The length is measured from the waist. Take a measuring tape - attach one end to the waist of the frame doll, and lower the other end to the place where the skirt will presumably end;
- Add 1 cm to the obtained value - this will be the required length of the fabric cut. Let's assume that the length of the skirt should be 8 cm. 8 + 1 = 9. Mark 9 cm of length on a sheet of paper;
- As a result, you will get a rectangle 30*9 cm. Cut it out of paper and sign the template (directly on the sheet of paper) - "A medium-voluptuous skirt 8 cm long". Save this template.

Sewing
How to sew clothes for a doll, using the pattern described above:
- Attach the paper pattern to the selected material;
- Trace it with a piece of chalk or a small piece of soap. No width allowance is made, since due to the fullness of the skirt, it will not be difficult to hide 0.5-1.5 cm in the seams without damaging the appearance of the garment. The length allowance is already included in the pattern;
- After tracing the pattern onto the fabric, very carefully cut out the piece with scissors;
- Now it is necessary to process the edges of the upper and lower cuts;
- The lower edges are processed as follows: a piece of fabric 0.3-0.5 cm wide is folded over and stitched or sewn on by hand;
- Sewing machines sew profitably - both quickly and beautifully. In the absence of a sewing machine, it is quite possible to make a stitch by hand. If the clothes are made together with the daughter, they trust this stage to her;
- An elastic band needs to be sewn to the top edge. The length of the elastic band should correspond to the doll's waist circumference. The elastic band should be thin and stretchy. It needs to be stretched to the entire length of the top edge - in this pattern it is 30 cm. The elastic band needs to be stitched or hand-sewn from the inside;
- Then the piece of fabric on which the elastic is sewn is folded inward by the width of the elastic and sewn again. This way the elastic is hidden in the seam;
- The last step is to sew the skirt together. This is easy to do if you turn the skirt inside out and stitch from top to bottom.

Decor
In order for the doll's clothes to look beautiful, they need to be decorated with decor. The small size of the skirt itself is not an obstacle to this. Decorations for the interior doll are made with your own hands from:
- Beads;
- Busin;
- Iron-on stickers;
- Lace;
- Bayki;
- Flowers crocheted or knitted and so on.
A beautifully decorated skirt will not only be original, but also exclusive. You can entrust the decoration stage to the child himself - a little girl will easily cope with this task. It is recommended to crochet flowers with small-sized patterns and sew them to the skirt. Crocheted doll decorations are designed not only in the form of flowers, but also in the form of lace on the frill. Knit dolls different decorations and accessories - patterns are found on the Internet, and with crocheted decorations, dolls look more beautiful.
When making clothes and shoes for dolls with your own hands, pay attention to their decorations - after all, this is what distinguishes the doll form from the adult one. Good decorating can take longer than you'd like, but making a few template skirts and decorating them differently will add variety to your doll's wardrobe.
As you can see from the above information, making a toy wardrobe yourself is a very exciting and interesting activity. Not only adults, but also girls who like to dress up their toys can make a miniature wardrobe. When making things, you can use a variety of techniques, it is recommended to use your imagination and decorate each made detail with decorative elements. All things will be exclusive, unique, and the doll will look very fashionable. Never throw away patterns, diagrams and templates. If you or your children wear out some clothes, especially those made of brightly colored materials, do not throw them away, leave them for making doll clothes. You and your children will definitely like it.
