For a long time, men's fashion for jeans remained within the framework of classic standards. In recent decades, men have begun to wear non-standard models of jeans more often, among which tapered styles have achieved particular popularity. Skinny jeans for men have long ceased to be a newfangled trend, turning into a familiar wardrobe item. Despite their popularity, they are considered a controversial thing. Men experience many difficulties trying to choose the right model for an attractive image. Correctly chosen tapered jeans can become the basis of a stylish appearance.
Features and how to wear
Skinny jeans are unique in that the process of choosing them is highly individual. However, there are a few key points to consider when choosing any skinny jeans for men.
For example, when trying on, you should be able to easily insert a finger between the waist and the belt. You should also be able to pull the jeans a couple of centimeters away from your hips without much effort. If you can't do this, they are too small.
Some people believe that jeans should be smaller than their true size. This is justified by the fact that they stretch over time. This approach works well with jeans that contain elastane. If the model is made entirely of cotton, then it will be much more difficult to stretch, and after each wash, such jeans shrink.
You should consider your body shape and size to find the style that suits you best. Don't try to squeeze into skinny jeans at all costs if your legs are too big - in that case, you're better off choosing slim-fit.
On the other hand, if you are very thin, you don't necessarily have to choose super-tight men's jeans. Such a cut will only emphasize this feature.
Make sure the style is not too long. Low-rise jeans remain quite popular, but they are not suitable for everyone. They are mainly recommended for short men because they visually lengthen the silhouette. If your legs are shorter than your torso, then you should pay attention to models with a medium or high waist. For men with a slender build and tall stature, jeans that begin to taper from the knees and below are suitable. Regardless of how tight the model is, you should be able to bend your knees and sit down without any discomfort.
Tapered styles are mostly produced in a restrained range. The most popular colors are blue and black, as they harmoniously combine with almost any clothing. Dark shades are more suitable for owners of large legs, this allows them to be visually made slimmer.
Skinny jeans made of thick fabric can cause serious discomfort during hot weather. Because of this, many people do not wear them in the summer. However, for people who are not ready to say goodbye to their favorite thing, there are a number of rules that will help minimize the discomfort:
- In summer, you should forget about dark shades, replacing them with bright colors. Pastel shades are considered the most appropriate - they reflect the sun's rays to a greater extent;
- It is worth paying attention to men's jeans that use a special lightweight fabric. They have less weight and density, and the skin in them is better ventilated.
Avoid overfilling the pockets of skinny jeans. Items that stick out too much will attract unnecessary attention. Stretched pockets can ruin the shape of the jeans. Men are advised to replace their skinny jeans as often as possible to keep their appearance neat. A new pair of skinny jeans may fit you perfectly, but the same pair of jeans will become sloppy and saggy after a certain period of wear. Once jeans become too worn and stretched, they need to be replaced as soon as possible. You may need to get a few identical pairs of your preferred style to have a backup.
In general, the following points should be noted:
- Make sure the jeans are not too tight or baggy;
- Look for high-waisted styles if you have a big belly;
- Choose dark shades to look slimmer;
- Replace skinny jeans when they lose their shape and no longer fit properly;
- Unlike skinny, slim-fit style is more versatile.
Existing options
There are two main silhouettes of skinny jeans.
Skinny: The narrowest style, most styles are made from a blend of cotton and elastane. Elastane makes the jeans stretchy and flexible, making them easier to put on and take off and less restrictive to mobility. Compared to other styles, skinny jeans are the most difficult to choose because they need to fit exactly.
Due to their features, skinny jeans are suitable for people with a fit body and harmonious proportions. Such jeans are often called "second skin", they emphasize any flaw or advantage of the figure, so it is necessary not only to choose the right style, but also to be confident in your figure.
Slim Fit: Often made from 100% cotton, with very little elastane if any. Compared to skinny, they are less demanding on the figure, have a less form-fitting cut and are more like a classic style.
Jeggings, which are a combination of jeans and leggings, are worth mentioning separately. They are not jeans in the full sense of the word and are popular among girls, while men's models are created and used very rarely.
There is no clear distinction between the silhouettes. Each clothing manufacturer interprets such distinctions differently and has its own opinion about which style to classify its jeans models as. Designers actively experiment not only with width, but also with length, fit, and decoration.
Who is it not suitable for?
As already mentioned, skinny jeans clearly highlight body flaws in men. Most models of this type are suitable for tall and slender men. The more massive and disproportionate the physique, the more effort is required to find suitable jeans.
Unfortunately, for some body types, the skinny style may not be suitable under any circumstances. A person can get rid of excess weight through diet and exercise, but fundamental body parameters such as leg length, straightness, and various defects are often beyond his control.
Skinny jeans are also not suitable for strict dress codes. For some positions, even the most formal black jeans are unacceptable. It is important to remember that sometimes wearing skinny jeans can lead to unpleasant health consequences or can aggravate existing diseases.
Skinny jeans can compress nerve endings and blood vessels, which can cause discomfort or lead to varicose veins. Some models can be too tight around the lower abdomen. This is especially harmful for people with various gastrointestinal diseases - high pressure in the abdomen can cause bile to reflux into the stomach and increase heartburn.
And finally, incorrect wearing of skinny jeans can lead to infertility and even impotence. The latter reason is the decisive factor, due to which the choice of such styles must be approached with extreme responsibility.
Creating a stylish image
Once you have found the right jeans, you need to figure out how to incorporate them into your style. If you wear skinny jeans that flatter your figure, you can create a truly impressive look.
Skinny jeans look great with fitted shirts, T-shirts and tank tops that fit perfectly. If you have extra weight in the abdominal area, you need a looser T-shirt that covers your hips. Those with a particularly thin build should look for V-neck T-shirts that visually add volume.
Skinny jeans go well with a fitted jacket. It is worth considering that a jacket is preferable for men with an ideal figure. In most cases, such clothes will look caricatured and unsightly. A classic jacket will not work for these purposes, since due to its length, it can shift the emphasis too much to the torso.
Skinny jeans look good with a cropped jacket. This option is good for thin men of short stature. Thanks to this combination, the proportionality of the top and legs is achieved.
A good addition to skinny jeans can be a biker jacket. Its use allows you to externally enlarge the shoulders and narrow the waist, creating an inverted trapezoid silhouette. A similar effect can be achieved by wearing winter jackets, down jackets, sheepskin coats. It is worth noting that this option is not suitable for everyone. Many men initially have a voluminous top and such clothes will only emphasize their already rather large shoulders. Because of this, the legs will look too thin.
Because skinny jeans taper at the calf, they draw extra attention to the shoes. For this reason, you can't be irresponsible when choosing shoes, because any defects (wear, dirt) will be clearly visible.
Many people think that only sneakers or trainers are appropriate, but the range of suitable footwear is much wider. There are various options for which you can use both sports and more classic shoes.
High-top sneakers, trainers and moccasins go well with skinny-fitting models. If you want to create a more serious look, loafers may be suitable. During colder seasons, brogues look good. Also in winter, high boots with a solid sole are chosen to make the look more masculine.
