Often a girl dreams of a dress, but cannot find a suitable model or the desired style, and the suitable options that come along are too expensive. A great solution would be a sundress made from old jeans with your own hands, which can be sewn without any particular difficulties.
Selecting a pattern
The choice of pattern mainly depends on the desired style and ease of sewing. This is often influenced by fashion trends, an important place among which is occupied by women's sundresses and loose denim dresses.
A pattern is a rough sketch on paper or tracing paper of a future dress with specific drawing of seams, pockets and details. Patterns often help not to get confused, in what order to do the work, where the places of stitching the seams are.
After you draw the pattern, you need to transfer its main elements to the fabric. This can be done either with a regular pencil or using special sewing tools.
Necessary tools and materials
Making a dress yourself is a very labor-intensive process, but without going too deep into it, you can use three basic elements: scissors, a needle and thread. But, of course, in order for the dress to be perfect, you should use the entire set, consisting of the following elements:
- several needles;
- thin, thick thread;
- elastic thread or rubber band;
- fabric chalk;
- thimble;
- tracing paper and pencil;
- scissors.
Denim is a fairly dense material, so make sure the needle is sharp and thick enough, otherwise you'll have to put in a lot of effort to thread it. The same goes for the thread. A regular thin thread cannot join any fabric, it should be selected carefully so that the seam does not come apart after the first fitting.
If you decide to take up sewing seriously and make a detailed pattern, then regular pins and chalk will help you with this. Special chalk is necessary for the pattern: it will accurately describe the edges of the future product and at the same time will be easily erased from the fabric. Many people prefer not to sew a sarafan from jeans by hand, but to use a sewing machine. This method has several pros and cons. First of all, you need to know the technology of working on a sewing machine. It is not so difficult to learn, but it will take time and training. It is very important to make the seam even. This is affected by the speed of the wheel scrolling, the smoothness of the fabric and equal intervals in the space between the stitches.
Opening
The most popular method is quite simple. With its help we will learn how to make the top of the future sarafan. Take an old pair of jeans, it can be torn absolutely anywhere, even between the legs. Cut off a piece in the waist area approximately 10 cm wide, approximately to the place where the trousers diverge. Then do not forget to stretch the pattern of the straps down.
You can better navigate using the example of the photo below. Having cut the fabric in this way, all that remains for you to do is sew the ends of the straps together. The dotted lines show where it is best to make a cut (later it will be sewn together, bypassing the cut piece) to make the straps comfortable. Thus, the top of your sundress is almost ready, it can be continued with a denim skirt or use another material: leather, cotton or airy tulle.
Sewing the product
After you sew the top of the product, you need to think about the style of the skirt. We will cut the skirt directly from the legs. Cut off the top of the jeans, we get two peculiar tubes of fabric. Each leg must be cut along the outer seam. Two pieces of fabric remain, in the middle of which there is a seam - this will become the basis for the skirt.
Flared
A sarafan for a girl or a young woman is best made with a flared skirt, it will look playful, airy and romantic. For a not too flared skirt for a sarafan, you will just need to sew two pieces of fabric from jeans together, strictly along the remaining seams. Before you start working, be sure to accurately measure the length and width of the future skirt. Make sure that you can easily put on the product, if necessary, you can insert a zipper. Buttons will be a wonderful fashionable alternative; they do not necessarily have to be used as decoration; if you make a robe skirt, it can be fastened with them.
Direct
Making a straight-cut skirt for a denim sundress is not much different from the technology with a flared style. You will need to measure the width of your hips, cut the pieces of fabric so that they are the same width along the entire length.
To give the sundress an elegant look, leave a small slit at the hem, but note that the fabric should be carefully sewn on both sides so that it looks neat. The same goes for the bottom hem, as well as any edges and frills. After you cut and sew the top, create the bottom of the sundress, they need to be sewn together, leaving a seam on the inside.
It is not difficult at all to sew a sarafan yourself, and at the end you can do some decorating, a favorite female pastime. In the coming season, inserts from various materials or decorations from rhinestones, beads or artificial pearls are very popular.
