How to make a blanket from old jeans with your own hands, all in detail

Patchwork from old jeans Recommendations

Housewifely girls never have materials left in the house. Why throw things away if you can sew new items from them. For example, a bedspread made from old jeans with your own hands looks original, which will perfectly decorate a sofa or become a blanket in the summer. Design ideas, decor and sewing methods will be a hint in creative work.

What materials can it be combined with?

Old jeans are a versatile material for further alterations. You can sew real masterpieces from them: bedspreads, blankets, pillows, potholders, bags, covers and backpacks. All these items will not only decorate your home – they can be used perfectly in everyday life. Due to the density of denim, it wears out slowly over time, so the service life of such items is long.

The most popular option for making a denim bedspread is sewing it in the patchwork style. This direction involves the use of mixed-type fabric scraps, so the result is a bright, interesting and original bedspread for the home.

This piece of home textile will be a good gift for a newborn baby.

To make the product look beautiful, it is recommended to use denim in combination with other materials. Here are some ideas of what cotton goes with:

  • denim of a different color. For example, you can prepare light, dark and sand-colored jeans. Adding red jeans to the model will mean that the blanket belongs to a girl;
  • plain patches of thick fabric. Such an addition will make the bedspread stylish and discreet. It can be used in almost any interior;
  • multi-colored patches with a pattern. An excellent option for sewing a blanket for a child;
  • use of fabrics of different structures. Velour, velvet, burlap, sackcloth - all these combinations go well with jeans.

Before sewing a bedspread, you need to decide what kind of interior it will fit into. If it is a calm bedroom design, you need to choose warm shades. If the denim bedspread is intended for the techno style, you should give preference to black or white colors.

Stages of work

Sewing patchwork items is not for the faint of heart. It requires a lot of effort to complete the work. Perseverance and monotony are the main qualities that you need to have to take on the task of sewing a denim blanket.

Despite some difficulties, the result will still please the craftswoman with its beauty. The painstaking work bears fruit - the finished product turns out creative, it can be used as the main blanket for the sofa, and also given to a child. The entire work consists of several stages - preparation of materials, cutting and sewing.

Preparation of materials and tools

The first step is to calculate the size of the blanket. If the product is being sewn for a child, a size of 1x1.5 meters is sufficient. If the model is intended for an adult, it is better to make the blanket larger. Thus, a standard blanket for 1 person will have dimensions of 2x1.5 meters, and the option for 2 people - 2x2 meters. Having decided on the dimensions, you should select the necessary tools and materials.

To sew a bedspread from old jeans, you should prepare the following items:

  • sharp tailor's scissors;
  • chalk, a piece of flat soap or a fabric pen;
  • jeans of various colors and textures;
  • colored thick fabric for decoration, as well as for the back of the bedspread;
  • if you want to make the bedspread insulated, you need to prepare thin synthetic padding;
  • strong threads, machine needles.

You can use any fabric for the lining - the main thing is that the density is high. Calico or satin can be used as patchwork scraps. It is good if you have old clothes left in the house from which you can cut scraps.

Materials and tools

Opening

Before you start sewing a bedspread from old jeans with your own hands, it is recommended to carefully prepare the fabrics. To do this, all denim products are washed in a washing machine with the addition of powder, dried. Additional materials and fabrics also need to be washed - this can be done by hand. If the pants have been lying in the closet for a long time, it is worth adding a soft conditioner to the powder reservoir so that the fabric becomes pliable.

After washing, it is recommended to iron all materials, so they will be much easier to work with. The prepared raw materials must be cut out. After cutting, the following number of parts should be obtained:

  • denim square, size 12x12 cm – 120 pieces;
  • fabric strips 2.5x12 cm – 120 pieces;
  • fabric strips 2.5x14.5 cm – 120 pieces;
  • fabric strips 2x14.5 cm – 120 pieces;
  • fabric strips 2x16.5 cm – 120 pieces;
  • large lining fabric measuring 180x200 cm with seam allowances.

An old sheet can be used as a lining – the main thing is that it is whole and not worn out. This master class uses denim squares and fabric strips. The latter will be sewn on the corners of the squares. Other master classes suggest sewing round or square patches directly onto the denim.

The finished product is soft, it does not stick out on the bed if you cover it with it. If you use a thick, rough fabric for the lining, the bedspread will be hard and will only be suitable for covering the lower part of the sofa: where a person sits.

Sewing

Before you start making a patchwork blanket from old jeans, it is recommended to carefully arrange the prepared materials in piles. There should be a pile of denim squares on the table, as well as other piles of fabric, sorted by size. Thanks to this order, there will be no difficulties in the manufacturing process.

When everything is ready for creative work, you should start the process. It is described in detail in the table.

Stage Description
Connecting the denim square to the first strip To work, you will need to take a denim square and sew a strip of fabric measuring 2.5 x 12 cm to it. This must be done along the bottom edge of the square. Do not forget to sew the parts from the wrong side, at a distance of 0.5 cm. Before the next stage, you need to iron the resulting seam so that it does not interfere with the work: this must be done after each connection on the machine.
Connecting a square to another strip A strip of 2.5 x 14.5 cm needs to be sewn onto the resulting denim square. This needs to be done to the right or left of the previously sewn strip of fabric. It is important to iron the seam from the wrong side.
Connection with the third strip Another patchwork strip measuring 2x14.5 cm needs to be sewn on the bottom side – where the first strip was previously sewn. Iron the seam from the inside.
Flap on the right side On the side where the strip of fabric was previously sewn, you need to sew the last strip, measuring 2x16.5 cm, and also iron it.
Assembly In this way, all 120 square patches must be made. All squares are sewn into a single piece.

Before assembling, it is necessary to lay out all the parts on the floor to clearly see the most suitable combination of shades. When the order is chosen, all the flaps are connected into a single product: first, they need to be pinned together so as not to mix up the sequence. Then the finished canvas needs to be sewn onto the lining. Do not forget about processing the edges - you can use a material of a different color for it.

Care instructions

In order for the bedspread to serve for a long time, it is recommended to properly care for the product. If it serves as a blanket on the sofa, it is necessary to wash the product once a month, and also clean it as it gets dirty.A denim bedspread is a great replacement for a traditional blanket, especially if you have pets in the house. It is very easy to remove hair and any dirt from such material.

Basic rules of care:

  • You can wash the bedspread by hand: in water at room temperature and with a mild detergent;
