Handmade items are highly valued. You can create an original piece of clothing with your own hands by choosing the right pattern or step-by-step master class. Even a beginner can crochet a stole that will complement an everyday or festive look. Before starting work, you should decide on the knitting technique, type of yarn, and decoration method.
Materials and tools
For a light and warm product, buy a thin, soft thread. The density depends on what time of year the craftswoman is preparing the accessory for. The appearance and quality of the product is affected by the material:
- silk will give amazingly beautiful shiny iridescence;
- 100% wool is considered the warmest;
- mixed materials are wear-resistant;
- acrylic will highlight the texture.
The thinner the yarn and the lower the knitting density, the less warm the finished item will be. Therefore, wool and a mixture of acrylic and wool are ideal for winter, any thin threads will do for the summer model. In warm weather, an openwork model looks better, in cold weather - a denser one.
As for size and shape, standard shawls and stoles can be quite narrow, like scarves, classic rectangular or triangular (they are called baktus). The latter option has not lost its popularity for several seasons in a row.
The hook size should correspond to the thickness of the thread. To get an airy fabric, use a larger tool, for dense knitting - a smaller one. Some patterns require several hooks of different sizes.
Wooden and bamboo hooks are suitable for beginners. They are lighter and more comfortable. But today new, improved tools are already appearing. Standard popular metal hooks are produced with an ergonomic handle, rubberized parts.
Choosing a knitting technique
The patterns differ in diagrams and descriptions. Those who are taking their first steps in knitting are not recommended to independently change the ready-made patterns of an openwork crochet stole. Experienced craftswomen can modify standard patterns, creating unique products with an inimitable texture. The more complex the pattern, the higher the skill level required.
Patterns with crossed columns, loops and simple skips are ideal for beginners. Floral, geometric options are within the power of needlewomen with an average level of crochet skills. Complex motifs look amazingly beautiful, but only craftswomen can do them.
Popular patterns:
- "Pineapple" is easy to make, but looks impressive. By reducing the number of upper loops, you can achieve a different pattern.
- "Granny square" looks interesting, is easy to modify. A popular option for beginners.
- The "hexagonal motif" is not easy to knit and is difficult to change.
Before knitting a stole, beginners should pay attention to simple fabrics and light openwork options; from the motifs, choose the “granny square”.

Stages of work taking into account the model
Crocheting is a complex meditative process that requires perseverance. Not every needlewoman is ready to spend a week creating a handmade accessory. But patience is rewarded with an original product. The advantage of such things is that the girl can choose the pattern, color, row density, and decoration methods herself.
If desired, the creation of original stoles can be made into a business. Additional income is guaranteed. You can present your creations on special platforms for needlewomen.
Crochet stoles look more impressive and neat if a woman has extensive experience in needlework. Beginners are advised to practice on doilies with a repeating pattern before attempting complex scarves or capes. If the needlewoman has enough experience, she can take on any original design or develop her own.
Openwork
A simple fabric looks uninteresting and boring, so it is worth paying attention to a variety of patterns. Openwork options are more popular, but they are more difficult to knit. The amount of yarn is calculated based on the size. The described model will require 550 g of yarn. The finished product will be 50 x 190 cm in size. To increase the length or width, recalculate the number of loops.
We knit 163 air loops. Then we follow the proposed knitting algorithm:
- 1 sc (single crochet) in the second loop from the hook, *4 ch (air loop), 11 sc in the fifth loop of the previous row*. The rapport between the stars is repeated 31 times. At the end, knit 1 sc.
- 3 VP, *1 dc (double crochet) in sc of the previous row, 3 dc in sc of the previous row, 1 VP, 1 dc in the same sc of the previous row, 2 VP* - repeat the pattern until the end of the row.
- 3 VP, *1 dc in one VP of the previous row, 3 dc in the fifth loop, 1 VP, 1 dc in the same fifth loop, 2 VP*, repeat everything to the end of the row. The fourth row is similar to the second.
- Rows 1 through 4 are repeated until the length reaches 190 cm. The thread is cut and the product is washed. The cape is dried only on a horizontal surface, without wringing.
Warm for beginners
A detailed description of knitting a stole with a crochet hook or knitting needles will be enough for a beginner to make a beautiful thing with his own hands. The method presented below is suitable for beginners, but with basic knowledge. It is not difficult to knit a warm cape from motifs with a crochet hook, since the pattern is constantly repeated. You will need 400 g of yarn and a 5 mm hook. During the process, you must follow the description and diagram:
- make a chain of 16 VP, close into a ring with a SS (slip stitch);
- knit in circles according to the pattern;
- start with 1 VP, end with 1 SS;
- perform 1-11 circles.
Each motif is approximately 25 x 25 cm. You will need 26 squares, which are then connected together. The connection points are indicated by arrows on the diagram.
How to decorate
A complex pattern is quite self-sufficient. But you can diversify the thing not only by choosing an openwork knitting. Simple options are decorated with additional elements, for example, pompoms.
Pompoms can be bought ready-made or made by yourself. Fur or fabric options are preferred. Do not replace them with tassels.
A simple stole made of motifs is complemented by a border of a contrasting or similar shade. Fringe is relevant this season, but it is not always appropriate. Textured yarn looks exquisite and interesting, allowing you to achieve a variety of effects.
For a woman experienced in needlework, it will not be difficult to knit a gradient pattern. Smooth color transition is relevant this season. You can also use rhinestones, stones, beads.
Knitting patterns for scarves and capes are available for both beginners and experienced craftswomen. All that remains is to choose an option for your level, select materials, tools and you can start. Over time, your skill will improve, allowing you to choose more complex patterns.
