The ancient Eastern teaching of yoga has become an integral part of the lives of many modern people. It provides not only for the spiritual and mental development of a person, but also various physical practices. Unlike some sports, performing asanas (certain poses) does not require a lot of equipment. However, yoga clothing is an important aspect of these activities, because it involves not only the consciousness and mind, but also the human body. Such practices are combined with meditation, and clothing should not interfere with this process.
Traditional training kit
The main requirements for clothing for both men and women during yoga classes are comfort and convenience. But it is important to maintain a balance between freedom of movement and the ability to control the execution of asanas. This is especially true for the initial period of classes, when all the poses have not yet been worked out to automatism.
It is also necessary to take into account the features of the yoga direction in favor of which the choice was made. Many practices have their own specific features: in some cases, emphasis is placed on practicing breathing, for others it is necessary to control the movements of the arms and legs. A preliminary consultation with an instructor gives the greatest guarantee of the correct choice of clothing for specific classes.
The specifics of the chosen direction, the place where the classes are held and the characteristics of your own body should be taken into account when creating such a wardrobe. However, there are some general recommendations for choosing clothing sets for yoga classes.
Male
A men's clothing set for such occasions includes comfortable and non-restrictive items. These can be:
- Straight-leg sports trousers;
- "Aladdins" - harem pants with soft cuffs at the ankles and waist;
- Shorts - these can be used depending on the situation and time of year (they should not have a belt or zippers);
- T-shirt – regular or sleeveless; loose, preferably made of cotton. For certain types of practices (kundalini yoga), a tighter version made of fabric with a small synthetic content will be more convenient.
Traditionally, such exercises are performed without shoes, to create the best energy exchange between the body and the earth. But in the case of group training, you should protect your feet from possible troubles. Therefore, it is recommended to buy slippers made of natural material with a soft sole. Any of these things should meet the general requirements: not interfere with the performance of asanas and concentration.
Female
The range of clothing for women is much wider. A suit for classes can be purchased as a ready-made set or put together independently. In the first case, there is much less hassle - everything is already provided for this purpose and selected in a single style and color.
The second option takes more time, but it gives you the opportunity to express your individuality. You can independently select the lower and upper parts of the set according to your possibilities and wishes.
Bottom part:
- Loose trousers made of natural fabric;
- Aladdin-type bloomers;
- Leggings;
- Leggings;
- Shorts (with soft cuffs at the waist).
Upper part:
- T-shirt;
- Tunic;
- Top.
In their desire to look beautiful, women should still keep in mind a number of restrictions. Details that are relevant in everyday life or in a festive version (rhinestones, brooches, belts, buckles, appliques and other decorations) are not recommended for use in clothing for such activities. They can be not only inappropriate, but also dangerous during the performance of asanas. Just like in the previous version, for the women's set (for group classes) you can use slippers made of natural materials or comfortable short socks made of hygroscopic material.
Fabric requirements
Choosing the right fabric for your yoga outfit is one of the components of the success of the entire event. Incorrectly chosen fabric can create many problems during your classes:
- Skin irritations;
- Excessive sweating;
- Poor heat retention;
- Violation of energy exchange.
Knowing factors such as the composition of the fabric and its color will help you avoid these negative aspects:
- Composition - natural or blended fabrics are considered the most convenient for such activities. Of the natural ones, preference is given to cotton, linen, viscose. For blended fabrics, the following ratio is the most optimal: 90-85% natural threads, 10-15% synthetic (lycra). This composition gives the clothes the necessary comfort and functionality. If possible, you should choose clothes made of Indian cotton. Such fabrics have a good composition and are dyed with natural safe dyes;
- Coloring – when choosing the color of the fabric, you should keep in mind that the main goal of a yoga practitioner is to achieve harmony of soul and body. If group classes are expected, you should not be a bright, irritating spot for others. It would be reasonable not to use clothes of acid colors, but to choose clothes of restrained natural colors: brown, beige, white.
For homework, you can choose a brighter palette that matches your character and taste. It allows for different colors:
- Purple – for meditation;
- Red – for active, dynamic activities;
- Yellow – for performing classical asanas;
- Green – to gain confidence;
- Orange – for morning activities;
- Blue is the most universal, appropriate in any situation.
Of particular note are the classic colours – white and black:
- White symbolizes the perfection of the soul and evokes high feelings and aspirations in a person. However, it is rather impractical, it is difficult to constantly maintain a neat appearance. It makes sense to have a set of this color as a spare (for special occasions);
- Black color speaks of the intention to devote a lot of effort to the chosen path. But constant training in black clothes can reduce the positive mood. It is also better to have such a set as an additional one.
Tips for choosing
For those who have made their choice and found themselves in comprehending this ancient teaching, perhaps some tips on choosing clothes for yoga will be useful:
- For the first lessons, do not buy expensive things. It is possible that the practice will be limited to several visits. Then the risk of wasted money will be minimal;
- When choosing a set, do not proceed from fashion trends, but from your own feelings of color and shape. But do not forget about functionality, about yoga traditions and about the people around you;
- It is useful to determine the style of the intended practices in advance. Some directions have specifics in the performance of asanas, and therefore require specific clothing;
- Active and energetic workouts can give clothes a persistent smell of sweat. To get rid of it, it is recommended to rinse after washing with the addition of table vinegar. Clothes will look and smell fresh every time.
If during the class nothing distracts you from performing asanas, does not interfere with concentration, does not distract from meditation - then the clothes for yoga have been chosen correctly.
