How to update a leather jacket at home effectively and quickly

Repair and restoration

Outerwear made of genuine or artificial leather will always be fashionable and relevant. Styles, colors, decoration methods may change, but such wardrobe items will always remain basic. With regular wear, outerwear quickly loses its original appearance, the material loses its brightness, cracks and bald spots appear on it. There are several effective ways to update a leather jacket at home that will help give it a shine. After such procedures, it will become like new and will please the owner for a long time.

Elimination of minor damage and abrasions

Many people wear leather jackets almost all year round – in spring, summer and autumn, so the product is subject to mechanical damage. Moreover, this applies to clothes made of both natural and artificial fabric. Do not despair, it is worth trying to restore it, put it in order. Several proven methods will help remove scratches:

  1. Minor imperfections on the jacket are removed by treating it with paraffin or special wax for facial skin. The composition is applied in a thin layer to the problem area and evenly distributed over it.
  2. To remove scuff marks from clothes, treat them with baby cream with added glycerin. Mix the product with water in equal proportions and rub the problem areas with it. No further rinsing is required.
  3. Worn areas can be rubbed with orange peel as the zest helps restore the shine to the leather.
  4. If the abrasions are quite pronounced, you can try to remove them with rubber glue. This product will also help remove the scratch. To mask problem areas, take a small amount of the composition and apply a thin layer to them. Then press with a clean dry cloth. When the treated areas dry, you need to apply a special cream that matches the color of the jacket.
  5. If the scuffs and scratches on the leather item are very noticeable, the previous methods of dealing with them will be ineffective. In this case, you will need special products. The best option is considered to be "Liquid Leather" - a professional composition that will help restore the surface of the leather jacket, returning it to its original appearance. The main thing is to choose the right color of the product. First, you need to carefully treat the problem area with sandpaper, wipe it with a degreaser. Then apply a thin layer of the composition and lightly press this place with your finger. Work is carried out in latex gloves. When the composition dries, the leather jacket is ready to wear. If the scratches are deep, the treatment is carried out 2 times. Special paints are used in the same way.

You can remove scuffs on a leather jacket with thick, transparent nail polish. The downside of this method is that after drying, the product can shine a lot, which will make it noticeable. In addition, over time, the polish will come off the surface on its own.

To remove scuff marks from clothing, treat with baby cream containing glycerin.
Rub worn areas with orange peel
Pronounced abrasions and scratches can be removed using rubber glue.

Color restoration

Natural leather retains its original shade for a long time, but over time its intensity decreases. Restoring the color of the product at home is not difficult, but you will need special products. The easiest way to restore shine is to use spray paint. The treatment is carried out according to the following algorithm:

  1. Before starting work, you need to tidy up the jacket - clean it of dirt and dust.
  2. When the product is dry, it is worth hanging it on a hanger.
  3. The paint must be sprayed carefully but quickly enough, holding the can at a distance of 15-20 cm.
  4. After these manipulations, leave the jacket to dry (for about 1.5-2 hours).
Clean the jacket from dirt and dust
Hang on a hanger
Spray paint, leave to dry

It is worth considering that it is better to carry out the treatment outdoors, since the paint can get on interior items, and it will be difficult to remove its traces. If the procedure is carried out at home, you must first cover the furniture with film or newspapers. You can use powder paints. In this case, you need to restore the leather jacket according to a different principle:

  1. Dilute the powder in hot water (the amount of liquid to dissolve it in is indicated in the instructions on the package) until the lumps are gone.
  2. When the water temperature cools down to 45 degrees, immerse the jacket in the solution and leave for 2-3 hours. To ensure uniform coloring and successful restoration, the item is immersed in the liquid in a straightened state.
  3. After this time, the product must be thoroughly rinsed in running water.

To consolidate the result, the jacket can be rinsed in a special solution, which is prepared by mixing 250 ml of vinegar, a tablespoon of salt and a liter of water. After washing, the product should be rinsed, then hung on a hanger. Drying is carried out in natural conditions.

If you need to renew an old light-colored leather jacket, you need to select a paint of the corresponding shade. A deviation in tone will lead to damage to the appearance of the product.

Dilute the powder, immerse the jacket in the solution, rinse in running water

Stain removal

Restoring a thing involves removing stains. While dust and dried dirt can be removed with a damp cloth or brush, some stains are difficult to remove. The best way to refresh a leather jacket so that the item is guaranteed not to be damaged is to take it to a dry cleaner. At home, you can use gasoline or acetone to combat problem stains. Dip gauze in the selected product and carefully treat the area with it. Finally, use a protective or restorative cream for a leather jacket. Before using gasoline or acetone, you need to test on an inconspicuous area of the item. Depending on the type of stain, you can try different products to remove them:

  1. Gasoline is the best way to remove rust from leather. The stain is removed using a sponge soaked in the solution.
  2. Salt stains can be removed with regular vinegar. Apply it to a napkin and wipe the problem areas with it.
  3. If there are oil stains or greasy spots on the jacket, they are removed with glycerin oil. Mix it with a small amount of water, soak gauze in the resulting solution, and treat the problem area. Finally, wipe the area with a dry napkin.
  4. If there are traces of a ballpoint pen on the item, they can be removed with any alcohol-containing product. Such compositions are safe and suitable even for light-colored items.

You need to be careful when working with items made from white, beige, and coffee-colored leather. Aggressive cleaning agents can cause the color to wash out, making the item unsuitable for further wear. To correct the situation and prevent fading, it is better to use regular alcohol.

A scratch or a hole is not a death sentence for a leather product. The problem area can be sealed, for this purpose, "Liquid Leather" is used. To carry out the work, you will need not only the product itself, but also a bandage and a small spatula (instead of it, you can take an old plastic card). To restore the leather and eliminate tears, you need to adhere to the following algorithm:

  1. Cut a piece out of the bandage; its dimensions should be slightly larger than the defect.
  2. Apply adhesive to the deformed area, apply a bandage, and press firmly.
  3. Using a spatula, apply “Liquid Leather”, distributing the composition evenly over the surface.
  4. Let the patch dry for 15 minutes, then repeat the procedure again.

When the work is finished, the jacket can be left on hangers. Complete drying occurs in 3-4 hours, but the first couple of days it is not recommended to wear the item in rainy weather.
