If outerwear is torn in a visible place, it needs to be repaired immediately so that the tear does not start to grow. Before taking a needle and thread, it is necessary to determine what fabric the outer layer is made of, learn how to sew up a hole in a jacket, the basic rules of the process. Otherwise, you can only harm the clothes, spoil their appearance. If you do not want to do the repair yourself, you can take the item to a specialized workshop or studio, usually repairing such damage is not expensive.
We repair damage along the seam
The most common problem is a tear along the seam. Such damage can be caused by a snag on the fabric, a sharp tug, or poor sewing quality. It is quite easy to deal with the problem. To do this, you will need to take threads of the appropriate color and a needle. You also need to know how to properly mend a hole in a down jacket using a sewing machine.
If the clothes have a lining, before sewing up a hole in the jacket, you should rip its seam to make it easier to get to the place of the tear. You need to work as carefully as possible, the stitching should be barely distinguishable from the factory one. To increase the strength of the new seam, it should be made longer than the size of the hole. You need to start working a few centimeters before the start of the tear and finish 1-2 cm after. At the end of the restoration of the jacket, you should sew the lining back.
If you don't want to rip the inner layer of clothing, you can repair the down jacket with a hidden or invisible seam. To do the job correctly, you should stick the needle in from the inside of the jacket so that the knot of thread is invisible. After that, you need to make a parallel seam with stitches from the outside of the clothing. In order for the product to look neat, it is necessary to maintain an equal distance between the seams. Once you have finished stitching, you need to carefully secure the thread and hide it inside the jacket.
Masking the hole
If you don’t want to mend the damage to your jacket, you can repair the tear using the following means:
- Decorative patch. There is a wide range of such elements that are used not only for repairing clothes, but also for decoration. Patches can be fabric, rubber, leather; the latter option is well suited for jackets made of the same or denim fabric and looks organic on them. To fix a piece of fabric, it must be applied to the place of the tear and sewn with a blind stitch.
- Reflective tape. This option is suitable for sportswear or children's clothing. The only drawback of this method is its impracticality, since even in the case of a small hole in the coating, you will have to sew on a long reflective tape and carry out the same procedure on the other side of the product.
- Fabric heat-seal. A quick and reliable way to discreetly get rid of a small hole in clothing. Such stickers are presented in the form of small fabric patches that are attached to any product under the influence of temperature. They should be placed on the damaged area, a layer of fabric should be laid on top and this area should be carefully ironed.
Another option to disguise a hole is to attach a zipper, rivet or button. This method will help not only with covering the hole, but also with decorating a previously unremarkable item.
Zippers, buttons and rivets are not always suitable, as they will only look harmonious in certain areas of the garment, such as the front part at chest level, the pocket area and the sides.

Methods of repairing a bologna product
Bologna is an artificial fabric, reinforced with rubberized material, invented by the Italian engineer Giulio Natta. Such products have poor durability and are often damaged in various ways:
- a rupture or cut due to external mechanical impact (for example, under the armpit);
- a hole if you burnt your jacket with cigarettes or other hot objects;
- hooks of different sizes.
To make damage invisible, the following are used:
- iron;
- a small piece of natural fabric;
- polyethylene;
- patch;
- acetone to degrease the surface of the material;
- superglue.
Installing the patch
The most common method of repairing damage is to patch up a hole in a down jacket. The method involves applying a special fabric, leather or rubber patch to the tear or burn. You need to choose a piece in accordance with the size of the hole and the color scheme of the clothes. In order for the end result to look beautiful, you need to know how to properly sew up a hole in a down jacket:
- Turn the garment inside out and lay it out on a flat surface.
- Using acetone or gasoline, degrease the damaged area. This procedure is necessary so that the fabric can adhere to the surface of the material.
- Apply a thin layer of superglue from any brand to the prepared patch.
- Carefully and evenly connect the parts of the gap together, making sure that no stretches or wrinkles are formed.
- Place a patch with glue on the tear and apply a small press on top of it for 3-5 minutes.
- Turn the product back and evaluate the result of the work.
You can buy patches for your jacket in any department with accessories. The type of material should be selected depending on the material and the threads used to sew the down jacket. For children, it is better to use bright and cartoon patches, while for adults, leather or fabric patches in classic colors look more organic.
Use of polyethylene and non-woven fabric
You can iron the jacket together with the patch. For this method, you need to take polyethylene or interlining tape, as well as a small piece of fabric that is similar in color, gauze or natural material. To fix the defect correctly, you need to follow this algorithm of actions:
- Turn the jacket inside out and lay it out on a flat surface.
- Rip open the lining on the inside to make it easier to get to the damaged area.
- Cut out a small piece of polyethylene or interlining, and also prepare a slightly larger piece of fabric in a similar color to the main product.
- Carefully connect the edges of the hole together and make sure that no folds or stretches appear on the surface. Most often, unevenness appears on the sleeve.
- Apply a piece of polyethylene or non-woven fabric to the connected edges of the tear from the inside, after which it must be smoothed out well.
- You need to lay out a prepared piece of fabric on top of the polyethylene.
- The entire area should be covered with gauze or natural material and the area should be carefully ironed.
- After the procedure, the lining can be carefully sewn and the jacket can be turned inside out.
You can repair a polyester jacket yourself using high temperatures. Polyethylene or interlining (dry glue tape) melts and securely attaches a pre-prepared piece of fabric to the damaged area.
Liquidation of a burnt place
Burnt spots on a bologna jacket can appear for various reasons: contact with a cigarette, an open fire, or simply a hot device. Effective ways to patch a down jacket with your own hands at home if it has a cut or burn:
- Repairing the damaged area using decorative fittings. This method is often used if the clothes already have some patterns, rivets, and other elements. In this case, you can repair the jacket with any embroidery.
- If the burn was on the front lower or upper part of the garment, it can be masked with a patch pocket, which should be carefully sewn onto the jacket along the seam.
- The easiest way to eliminate this kind of problem is to attach a fabric, silicone or leather patch to the burnt area. To increase the strength of such a patch, it can be fixed not only on the outside, but also on the inside.
If the situation requires it, the patch can be sewn on the other side of the garment. This is done so that the appearance of the product looks harmonious, and the attached patch does not stand out from the overall image.
