Fashion is unpredictable, sometimes clothes that everyone seemed to have forgotten about for a long time come back into popularity. This also applies to headwear. Every fashionista knows that a cap is a small, loosely worn hat with a thick visor. The accessory looks good on both men and women. This season it is relevant again.
What is it
The word "kartuz" comes from the French "cartouсhe", meaning "cartridge". It is believed that this name comes from the Dutch "kardoes". Previously, it was believed that the term developed from the Greek καρκέσι (felt hat), but this theory was later refuted. During the time of Peter the Great, the word "kartushe" was also used. Initially, a kartuz was a cloth bag for storing gunpowder used in artillery work. Around the 40-60s of the 19th century, for some unknown reason, this was the name given to a civilian cap.
Most often, the cap is made in the form of a small, loose hat with a rigid visor. In a broader sense, the cap is a regular cap with a plastic visor and an extended crown. This headdress usually consists of the following components:
- visor (almost always strong and rigid);
- crown;
- bottom (can be oval or round);
- cylindrical band;
- strap (previously used to fix it on the head, now it often serves as a decorative element).
Headwear adds boldness, elegance and elusive attractiveness to the image of modern women. It not only warms and protects from the sun's rays, but also slightly corrects the facial oval, hides hair flaws, and shows everyone around the woman's awareness of the latest fashion trends.
History of the accessory
Initially, the cap was worn exclusively by the military. Around the 16th century, it became part of the wardrobe of most military personnel. Two centuries later, this headdress became popular in civilian circles. Since the 18th century, the model reached Prussia, from where it spread to European countries. Its main feature at that time was the strictness of lines and the precision of the silhouette.
In the 19th century, the cap experienced the peak of its popularity. There were even special models for representatives of different classes. This headdress was worn constantly, taking off only before any official events. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the popularity of the cap began to gradually decline.
Civilian caps became widespread in other countries: Great Britain and Germany. For some time, the cap of Prince Henrik was very popular. In 1990, it became known throughout Russia under the name "Zhirinovka" - thanks to the leader of the LDPR, who often appeared in public wearing this headdress. It differs from the classic Russian cap in the trim of the band and the excessively rough visor. Such models also stood out for their reduced band, the shape of the visor and its slight slope, and dimensions.
At one time, English “docker” caps gained popularity; they had a very small band, a shallow bottom and a different visor shape.
Design and materials
For almost the entire history of the cap, it was made of coarse cloth. Today, the range of materials has expanded significantly and includes different fabrics. The most commonly used are:
- felt;
- denim fabric;
- cloth;
- wool;
- lightweight materials (linen, cotton).
The bright multi-colored print on the cap will evoke associations with the Soviet clown Oleg Popov.
Light natural fabrics and denim are usually intended for sewing summer models. They are worn to protect from the scorching sun. Cloth, felt, woolen fabrics are more suitable for the autumn-winter period, when the headdress should warm the head.
The design of caps is so diverse that you can choose a product for absolutely any type of face. It is only important to decide on a color that would successfully emphasize the owner's appearance.

Modern fashion trend
Recently, the cap has become popular again. Today, it is worn by girls. It has long been considered an absolutely male prerogative. There are many models with rhinestones, bows, straps and other decorative components that are suitable for the beautiful half of humanity. The accessory will help a woman solve several stylish problems at once:
- Hide your morning hair mess from strangers without wasting hours in the bathroom.
- Become like fashion bloggers.
- Correct the shape of the face by narrowing the wide forehead.
- Protect your head from the scorching rays of the sun or cold wind.
Leather caps are especially popular this year. They go with a casual style with jeans, trousers or a skirt. The headdress will successfully complement the street style with a biker jacket or coat. It is impossible to imagine a military look without such a cap. The cap looks great with clothes from a business wardrobe. It will add severity and elegance to the suit, but at the same time will act as a highlight, which is often needed in monochrome strict business sets.
No less popular are women's caps, which stand out with a 3-5 cm high band. Such headdresses most often have a round or flat crown. The women's accessory has rounded shapes and a shortened visor.
This season, gavroche caps are back in fashion. They have a voluminous and large top part, a small visor. If the size is chosen correctly, the accessory is firmly fixed on the head, it cannot be blown away even by a strong wind.
The cap should be selected depending on the shape of the face. Small hats are not suitable for large faces, and vice versa. If the accessory was chosen incorrectly, the situation can be corrected by pulling the cap down on the back of the head or pushing it over the forehead. When choosing, you need to consider the size. A narrow hat will not only squeeze your head, but will also look unattractive. It is best to choose single-color accessories.
