Hats are worn not only in the cold season, but also in the summer. Light headwear protects from the sun, decorates, and complements the image. An original openwork summer crochet hat will appeal to both adults and children. To make it, you need to choose a pattern that matches your knitting experience.
Selecting yarn and tools
Summer hats are knitted from light and thin thread. It is best to choose natural cotton yarn. The presence of a small amount of synthetic threads in its composition is allowed. But for children's products it is better to take 100% cotton. These fibers are breathable, hygroscopic, hypoallergenic and provide good protection from ultraviolet radiation.
Mercerized cotton or "Pekhorka openwork" are suitable for knitting summer hats. A headdress made of them will hold its shape perfectly. You can use the threads "Iris", "Lily", "Violet", "Chamomile".
When choosing yarn for crocheting a hat, you need to pay attention to its thickness, elasticity and density. Manufacturers write all the values on the packaging. Elasticity and density are necessary so that the finished product holds its shape well and does not stretch after washing. If the thread stretches or separates into individual fibers, it is better to combine it with another.
To create an original and beautiful accessory for the summer, you can choose modern decorated yarn. It can be decorated with lurex, rhinestones, sequins. Products made of melange yarn or sectional dyed threads look beautiful. For children's hats, they also often use "Grass" - a thread with a fringe along the entire length.
It is important to choose the right hook. For openwork patterns, numbers from 1.5 to 2.5 are suitable. But this depends on the thickness of the yarn. The thinner the tool, the denser the fabric is, and the finished product holds its shape better. If the children's openwork hat is very dense, the child will not be comfortable wearing it. When choosing the most suitable tool, it is recommended to knit several samples with the desired pattern using different hooks and choose the best one.
According to needlewomen, it is better to work with a metal hook, as plastic ones break quickly. But you should not choose an aluminum one, as it will darken the light thin thread.
Variety of openwork patterns
Crochet summer hats are knitted mainly with openwork patterns. There are quite a lot of them, which one to choose for making this or that headdress, only the needlewoman can decide. The hat consists of several parts:
- bottom;
- crown;
- fields.
Openwork crochet hats are knitted in a circle. This is convenient, since the product will be seamless. In addition, there are many pattern options for it. The most popular are "pineapples", "fans", "waves", "floral diamonds", "paths with openwork triangles", fillet or regular mesh. The last two options are most suitable for beginner needlewomen. A simple openwork hat can be knitted using alternating groups of three columns and arches of air loops.
The bottom is most often knitted with a dense pattern, since it protects the head from the sun. You can take any circular knitting pattern, for example, a napkin option you like. After moving on to the crown, you just need to stop adding loops, then the product will begin to take the desired shape. You can continue knitting an openwork pattern or knit with regular arches of air loops. This mesh for a summer hat is the most convenient, since it does not interfere with air exchange, so it is not hot in it.
Once you have reached the desired size, you can stop knitting. Another option is to continue and start adding loops. You will get a hat with a brim. Such accessories look good not only on girls. For women of any age, a fashionable hat with large brim will become an original decoration. Moreover, it is not only the pattern with which they are knitted that is important. Often, the most striking detail is the beautifully decorated edge of the product. These can be “fans”, “shells” or a complex openwork border.
If you are knitting a hat with a wide brim, you need to starch it, otherwise the brim will fall on your face.

Preparing for work
To ensure a summer hat fits well, you need to take measurements. First, measure the head circumference (HC). To do this, place a tape measure across the forehead, then over the ears and along the protruding part of the back of the head. To determine the size of the bottom, divide the resulting value (HC) by 3.14 (the number Pi) and subtract 1-1.5 cm.
The second important value is the depth of the cap. It is also measured with a centimeter tape. It is laid from one ear to the other across the crown. Then the resulting value is divided in half and 1-2 cm is added to the result so that the cap covers the ears.
Knitting stages taking into account the model
Knitting starts from the middle of the bottom in a circle. To do this, 4-6 air loops (VP) are collected, a ring is made with a connecting post (SS). For lifting, at the beginning of each row, you need to knit 3 VP, they correspond to 1 double crochet (DS). The last loop of each row is SS.
Each hat is knitted according to its own pattern. Additionally, beginners should use the description, which will help them understand where to make increases, how many loops to add, when to make the transition to the crown. When knitting complex patterns, the description will help you not to get lost.
Women's for Beginners
A simple women's hat will decorate your wardrobe in a casual, sporty or boho style. It is easy to knit, even an inexperienced needlewoman can handle it:
- First, knit 15 CH into a ring of 6 VP.
- The next row is alternating VP and SN.
- Then 2 CH are knitted into each arch, with 1 VP between them.
- The next row is the same, only 3 CH.
- From the next row, increases are made. First, an additional group of 3 CH is knitted into every fourth VP arch, then into every fifth arch, sixth, and so on, until the bottom becomes the required size.
- When moving to the crown, you need to knit several rows with a single crochet (SC).
- The crown is knitted with a simple pattern, alternating 3 CH with 1 VP.
- In the last row, 3 dc alternate with 2 sc.
You can tie the edges of the hat with simple stitches or a pattern.
Children's room with a canopy
A beautiful crochet baby hat can be knitted in a day, especially if you use a simple pattern. Then it will suit not only girls, but also boys. You can decorate it with an original visor that will protect your eyes from the sun. Description of the pattern:
- Connect 4 VP into a ring.
- Knit 11 CH into it.
- Next, knit 2 CH into the first two loops, then skip the loop, knitting 2 VP, and so on until the end of the row.
- In the next row, make 4 dc in the middle between the posts, between them 2 VP, 1 dc, 2 VP, 1 dc in the arch.
- For the next row, you need to alternate 4 dc between the 2 ch stitches.
- Repeat point four.
- Knit the next 2 rows in the same way as described in point 5.
- Then 4 CH alternate with 3 VP.
- 2 rows are knitted in alternation: 4 CH, 2 VP, 1 CH, 2 VP, 4 CH.
- From the next row, knit not 1 CH, but 2 CH.
Continue knitting until the hat reaches the desired size. Usually, this is another 6-8 rows. To close the knitting, you need to make 1 dc in each loop, and 1 sc in the next one.
The visor can be knitted separately and sewn to the edge, or you can start knitting it immediately on the basis of the finished product. For density, it is sometimes recommended to make it double and insert cardboard, thin plastic or fishing line inside. But you can knit the visor with a dense knitting. To do this, you need to determine where it will be located, knit 25 sc in each loop of the last row. Then each subsequent row is knitted with sc. At the end, grab 4 loops of the last row of the cap. You will get 29 loops in the second row, 33 loops in the third, from the fourth row increase by 1 loop. Knit like this until the required size. Before tying, you can insert a fishing line so that the visor holds its shape.
Accessory decoration
Openwork crochet hats look beautiful and original on their own. If desired, they can be decorated additionally. There are several options for decorating the finished product:
- Most often, crocheted hats are decorated with flowers. They can be knitted from yarn using the Irish lace technique, cut out of fabric or embroidered with threads. Usually, one large flower is placed on the side or a composition of several small ones.
- Children's hats are decorated with butterflies knitted from the same or contrasting threads. Eyes and antennae are made from beads.
- Appliques, metal animal figures, and pendants with small toys look good on children's hats.
- You can create patterns from beads or seed beads or simply sew them along the edge.
- Satin ribbon can be used as a border for the product, it looks especially good on hats with wide brims. Ribbons are also used to make flower buds.
It is very easy to crochet a summer hat even for a beginner needlewoman. And for experienced craftswomen it will take only a few hours. The resulting product can become a real decoration not only for a child, but also for an adult.
