How to tie a Windsor knot tie, popular techniques

Ties

Scientists at Cambridge University have found that there are about a hundred different ways to tie a tie. Not many of them have become widespread in everyday life. One of the most popular options is the Windsor knot, which appeared in Great Britain in the first half of the last century. Its popularity is explained by the simplicity and speed of tying.

What is it

The Windsor knot is one of the classic options. If you know how to tie a tie this way, you get a knot in the shape of a regular triangle with sides of the same length. The base is dense and strict.

The Windsor knot is distinguished by its presentable, solid appearance. In order for a tied tie to look beautiful, it is necessary to correlate the dimensions of the knot with the width of the accessory and the height of the collar. Windsor goes well with shirts that have a wide collar, and it is better to use a thin tie for it (although the latter is not critical, if necessary, you can use wide accessories).

The Windsor tie can be easily tightened or loosened by yourself. It is well adjusted by pulling the short and long edges. It is convenient to take it off over the head without untying it completely. It is not recommended to tighten the accessory too much. If you tie it too tightly, the triangle will not be perfect - it will lose volume and look wrinkled. In addition, long-term use of an over-tightened tie will make breathing difficult and may even be harmful to health.

The Windsor knot on a tie is ideal for any formal or social event. It can be used for official meetings. This method of tying looks good on a strict classic suit. It is relevant for shirts with a so-called shark collar.

To tie a tie with a Windsor knot beautifully, you need to add a small but important detail. It is called a dimple, which is translated as a "hole" or "depression". To do this, at the penultimate stage of tying, passing the wide side through the neck loop, you need to fold the narrow end like an accordion.

History of appearance

The Windsor knot is associated with Earl Edward VIII (Duke of Windsor), who became famous for refusing the crown in favor of love, as well as his passion for fashion. He tied the knot in the form of a large triangle, using thick ties that were made to order. The Duke's admirers, mainly English aristocrats of the 1930s, adopted the manner of tying. At the same time, the name of the knot - Windsor - came into use. From Britain, the manner of wearing a tie spread throughout the world. Over time, various variations were invented.

In fact, the Duke of Windsor had nothing to do with the invention of the knot, but he was the one who popularized this way of wearing a tie.

The popular knot was named after the Duke of Windsor.

Step-by-step algorithm for tying

The Windsor knot for a tie has a number of subtypes. All of them are generally similar to each other, but have some minor features. You should learn to tie it standing in front of a mirror. This will give you the opportunity to see and remember the algorithm of actions.

Classical

Every man needs to know how to tie a Windsor tie in the classic way. The pattern is simple, so after a few practices, making such a knot will not be difficult. It is necessary to perform elementary actions step by step:

  1. The tie is placed above the collar, and the narrowed part should be 25 cm shorter.
  2. Next, all actions are carried out with the wide end of the tie. Place it on top of the narrow one. Pull it upward, threading the loops inside.
  3. They lower it down and tuck it under the narrow end, moving it to the right.
  4. Pull it up from the inside of the neck loop, and then down from the outside.
  5. They are brought out to the side above the shortened end.
  6. Pass it through the neck loop again.
  7. They are placed under a horizontally located jumper formed in place of the knot and pulled out.
  8. They tighten and give a beautiful shape.

An important advantage of the classic Windsor is the ability to visually correct a thin and long neck. Due to the volume, this drawback becomes almost unnoticeable.

Half Windsor

Well suited for ties with a wide base, shirts with a wide collar. The technique of execution differs from the previous version. The tying pattern is as follows:

  1. The tie is placed on top of the shirt with the wrong side down. The wide part is on the left and is longer than the narrow part.
  2. Next, work is carried out with the wide part. It is placed on top of the narrow one.
  3. Wrap around the narrow end at the back.
  4. Raise it up over the tie loop and pull it towards the neck.
  5. They are inserted into the loop and brought out from the right side of the narrow end.
  6. Turn to the left, forming the front side of the knot.
  7. They are inserted into the neck loop from the bottom up, holding the structure with their hands.
  8. Pass through the loop from top to bottom.
  9. They tighten the knot and adjust it.

At the final stage, the knot is decorated with a "dimple" - a short decorative oval-shaped fold. To create it, press the index finger on the place under the knot so that a depression is formed.

Double

The Double Windsor is similar to the classic version, but is more difficult to make. It looks good on wide-set collars, visually shortening a long neck. Step-by-step instructions for tying a Double Windsor knot:

  1. The tie is placed on top of the collar, the wide end is placed on top of the narrow one. It should be a quarter of a meter longer.
  2. Pull it up under the neck loop.
  3. Lower it down from the right side of the narrow end.
  4. They trace under the thin edge.
  5. Raise it up and down through the neck loop, bringing the end out on the right.
  6. Make a turn over the thin edge and lift it up, passing it through the loop.
  7. Insert the end into the resulting jumper.
  8. Make the resulting knot even.

All these options have different techniques, but the final result is the same. A properly tied knot resembles a triangle in shape and is located directly above the shirt buttons. It is believed that a knot made in this way is preferred by men who possess leadership qualities and business acumen.
